US Vice-President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination, crossing the threshold of 2,350 delegate votes needed to clinch the party’s ticket.
Gatekeepers News reports that although the virtual roll call voting process concludes on Monday, Democratic National Committee Chairperson Jaime Harrison confirmed Harris’s nomination on Friday.
Harris will formally accept the nomination next week, marking a historic milestone as the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major-party ticket.
She has already garnered support from a majority of Democratic delegates, including former President Barack Obama, after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.
President Biden expressed his pride in Harris, stating, “One of the best decisions I made was picking Kamala Harris as my vice president. Now that she will be our party’s nominee, I couldn’t be prouder.”
Harris is expected to announce her running mate on Monday, as she prepares for the presidential election.
