Nigeria has been plunged into darkness once again, as the national grid collapsed on Monday, resulting in a nationwide blackout.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to various distribution companies (DisCos), their feeders became inactive, leading to a significant drop in power generation.
Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) showed that the grid collapsed at approximately 1:30 pm, with power generation plummeting from 3,241 megawatts (MW) to 1,255MW within an hour.
As of the time of reporting, five out of 21 power plants connected to the grid were offline, while 17 continued to generate power. The TCN has yet to provide reasons for the collapse.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident on social media, stating that the grid collapsed at 2:30 pm.
“We understand that some of our customers are still without power due to a system failure from the national grid at 2.55pm today, 5th August 2024,” AEDC posted.
