Former president of Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino announced his tragic demise through a post on his official Instagram stories on Thursday.
The post reads, “Saddened to hear of the passing of former CAF President, former FIFA President and interim, FIFA Vice President and FIFA Council member, Issa Hayatou.”
“As a passionate sports fan and IOC Member, he dedicated his life to sports administration and on behalf of FIFA, and condolences go to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him. Rest in peace.”
According to Cameroonian media reports; Hayatou had been battling a protracted sickness before his death less than 24 hours to his 78th birthday.
Issa Hayatou served as Secretary General of Cameroonian Football Federation between 1984 to 1986, and then President between 1986-1988.
He was the acting President of FIFA between October 2015 to February 2016.
The deceased served as president of CAF between 1988 to 2017.
He received many honours and awards for his contributions to African football, including CAF Golden Lion Award and FIFA Order of Merit.
