NatureNews, a Nigerian publication focused on environmental journalism, has made history by becoming the first news outlet in the country to receive certification from the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI). This prestigious global certification follows a rigorous audit of the publication’s journalistic integrity and processes.
The JTI, developed by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) with input from over 130 experts and organizations, sets international standards for trustworthy journalism. NatureNews underwent an intensive online evaluation and on-site verification conducted by International Risks and Quality (IRISQ) to achieve this certification.
Aliu Akoshile, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of NatureNews, announced the achievement, stating, “This enviable certification is a testament to our unwavering commitment to journalism ethics, managerial excellence, professional integrity, accountability, and corporate governance.”
The certification comes as NatureNews approaches its fourth anniversary, highlighting the publication’s rapid rise to prominence in the field of environmental and climate change reporting. Over 400 media outlets from more than 70 countries are currently participating in the JTI program, with NatureNews leading the way in Nigeria.
Akoshile credited the publication’s success to its dedicated team and distinguished pan-African Advisory Board, whose expertise has contributed to NatureNews’ unique approach to development journalism. He also thanked the publication’s loyal audience across Africa and around the world for their continued support.
While celebrating this milestone, Akoshile emphasized that the work is not done, stating, “We will continue to innovate and deepen our professional excellence to meet the needs of our audiences for credible journalism and stay on top of the dynamic environmental challenges facing our continent and humanity.”
This certification is expected to further solidify NatureNews’ position as a leading voice in environmental journalism in Nigeria and across Africa.
