Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that his family announced his passing in a statement on Wednesday, expressing gratitude for a life “beautifully lived.”
Ayoola served as the second ICPC Chairman from 2005 to 2010, succeeding Mustapha Akanbi. Prior to his ICPC tenure, he had a distinguished legal career, rising from a High Court judge in 1976 to the Supreme Court, where he retired in 2003.
Born on October 27, 1933, in Ilesha, Osun state, Ayoola attended Temidire Model School and Ilesha Grammar School before obtaining a law degree in 1957. He studied at the University of London and Oxford University London.
Ayoola also served internationally, appointed by the UN Secretary-General as a judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone in 2002. He presided over the court from 2004 to 2005, trying those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Sierra Leone civil war.
