First Nigerian athlete to win an Olympic medal, Nojim Maiyegun is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that the pioneering figure died at the age of 84.
Maiyegun won a bronze medal in light-heavyweight boxing at 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
He subsequently won a bronze medal at 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.
An acquaintance of the deceased, Rudolfine Soultan in a Facebook post, revealed that Maiyegun passed away after a long illness.
Describing Maiyegun’s death as “horrible”, Soultan revealed that they would have marked their 17th anniversary together in two days.
