Court Summons CBN Governor Over Detained Binance Executive

CBN Governor, Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso
Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Head of the Legal Services Department to appear before it on September 2, 2024, with specific documents related to the money laundering case against Binance Holdings Limited and its executives.

Gatekeepers News reports that the court order, titled Subpoena Duces Tecum, commands the CBN Governor or a delegated officer to attend the court hearing and produce documents, including a certified true copy of the excel spreadsheet captioned ‘Export Exchange Rate Results’ published on the CBN’s website from June 1, 2024, to August 16, 2024.

Similarly, the Head of the Legal Services Department of the CBN has been summoned to appear before the court with documents related to the case.

The summons is part of the ongoing trial of Binance USA’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigan Gambaryan, and the exchange’s British-Kenyan regional manager for Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who are facing money laundering charges to the tune of $35 million brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Gambaryan is currently detained at the Kuje Correctional Facility, while Anjarwalla fled lawful custody on March 22, 2024.

The court has brought forward the trial date from October 11 to September 2, 2024, following a request by the defense counsel.
