Dr Uyi Igbinadolor, an Edo-born and American-based surgeon, has expanded his Market Women Money Empowerment program to Oredo Local Council, continuing his efforts across Edo State’s three Senatorial districts.
Gatekeepers News reports that this initiative comes in the lead-up to the upcoming Governorship election, where Dr Asue Ighodalo is a candidate.
The latest distribution took place on Monday at Uwa Market in Oredo, overseen by Hon. (Dr) Tom Obaseki, Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council. Dr Igbinadolor, through Dr. Obaseki, provided financial support to 100 market women, with each receiving 10,000 naira to bolster their businesses.
Dr. Obaseki, addressing the beneficiaries, stated, “Dr Igbinadolor, concerned about the current economic challenges, has initiated this support to assist traders during these difficult times.”
He emphasised that the funds were intended to supplement the women’s business capital.
The Council Chairman encouraged the recipients to use the money for its intended purpose and to remember Dr. Igbinadolor and his associate, Sir (Chief) Tonna Okei, in their prayers. He highlighted their role in conceiving and implementing this support program.
While presenting the initiative as part of a broader empowerment strategy, Dr. Obaseki also used the platform to advocate for political change. He urged the women to consider their votes carefully in the upcoming election, suggesting that a change in leadership could lead to improved economic conditions and security.
The event concluded with Dr Obaseki suggesting that similar initiatives might continue under a new administration, encouraging the beneficiaries to share their experiences with other community members.
This empowerment program represents one of several ongoing initiatives in Edo State as various stakeholders engage with communities ahead of the 2024 Governorship election.
