In a recent announcement from the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Lady Grace Zemaye Egbagbe has been conferred with the Knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Francis. This prestigious papal honour recognises Lady Egbagbe’s outstanding service to the Catholic Church and society.
The news was conveyed in a letter from Rev. Fr. Dr. Martin Onotina Alokwe, Chaplain of the diocese, on behalf of His Excellency, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi. The investiture ceremony is expected to take place at a later date.
Upon receiving the news, Lady Egbagbe expressed her deep gratitude and humility. In her response, she stated, “God knows I’ve received a host of honours/awards in my lifetime, but this one is the MOST SPECIAL! I am deeply humbled to share that I have been conferred with the Knighthood of the Order of St Gregory the Great by His Holiness Pope Francis!”
Lady Egbagbe, known for her philanthropic work and dedication to the Church, further added, “This honour fills me with immense gratitude to God and the Holy Father. I feel profoundly blessed as this recognition has strengthened my faith even further.”
The Knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory the Great is one of the highest honours bestowed by the Pope to lay individuals. It recognises their personal service to the Holy See and the Roman Catholic Church, through their unusual labours, support of the Holy See, and the good example set in their communities and countries.
After the investiture, Lady Egbagbe will be addressed as “Dame Grace Egbagbe.” She concluded her statement by saying, “I pray that God continues to guide me and use me as His vessel for service to humanity. May we all continue to walk in His light and love.”
This honour not only recognises Lady Egbagbe’s past contributions but also serves as an inspiration for her future endeavors in service of the Church and society. The Catholic community in Nigeria and beyond celebrates this recognition of one of its devoted members.
