Kogi State House of Assembly has called for the removal of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede due to the commission’s handling of the corruption case against former governor Yahaya Bello.
Gatekeepers News reports that the lawmakers, on Monday, condemned the EFCC’s siege on the Kogi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, where Bello was allegedly staying, and accused the commission of attempting to assassinate both Bello and current Governor Usman Ododo.
The assembly members are upset about the EFCC’s approach to the alleged N80.2 billion fraud case against Bello, calling it humiliating.
They also claim that the EFCC’s actions show a lack of respect for the governor’s lodge and the state as a whole.
Some lawmakers suggested that the EFCC chairman should be prosecuted for his alleged role in the attempted assassination.
On the other hand, a non-governmental organisation called Journalists is accusing Governor Ododo of shielding Bello from justice and obstructing the EFCC’s efforts to arrest and prosecute him. They’re calling on President Bola Tinubu to warn Ododo to stop interfering with the EFCC’s work.
Yahaya Bello is facing charges of money laundering and breach of trust, alongside his nephew and other associates, for allegedly embezzling N84 billion during his time as governor. The EFCC has been trying to arrest him, but Bello has managed to evade capture so far.
