Offa Robbery: Court Sentences Five To Death Six Years Later

A Kwara State High Court has sentenced five people to death over the robbery that occurred six years ago in Offa, Kwara state.

Gatekeepers News reports that some robbers invaded Offa and robbed at least five commercial banks in the community.

Over 30 persons including policemen were killed in the robbery.

The presiding judge, Justice Haleemah Salman found the five suspects involved in the incident that occurred in April 2018, guilty of illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.

Delivering the judgement, the judge said the offences were punishable by death and all evidence submitted by the prosecuting team found them guilty.

On the possession of firearms, the verdict pronounced judgement of three years in prison.

Though six suspects were initially arrested, one of them died in custody. The names of the convicts are Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salahudeen Azeez, and Niyi Ogundiran.

The prosecution counsel while speaking to the press said various reasons ranging from COVID-19 period and national assignment given to the judge informed the long process and thanked the court for the judgement.

The representative of the defence counsel, noted that the judgement would be appealed soon.

The court had in July, reserved judgement in the case.
