President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed upon the Speaker of House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
Gatekeepers News reports that GCON is the second-highest national honour in the Country.
The President had in a nationwide broadcast to mark the 64th Independence anniversary of the country on October 1, bestowed upon the Commander of Federal Republic (CFR) on the Speaker and Deputy Senate President.
Thereafter, House of Representatives on Wednesday called on the President to review the pronouncement and give the Speaker a higher honour.
Special adviser to the president on Information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Friday made the announcement through a statement released on Friday.
The statement goes, “President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight.”
“Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, in accordance with the National Order of Precedence.”
“The speaker, the Senate President, other principal officers of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice of Nigeria will be formally decorated with their new honours later.”
