Former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose has opined that former vice-president Atiku Abubakar should reconsider his political aspirations due to his advanced age.
Gatekeepers News reports that Fayose emphasised the need for a younger generation of leaders in Nigeria during an appearance on the Sunday Politics program on Channels Television.
“I am sure, at this stage, with all due respect to him, he (Atiku) would rather want to step away from the politics of contesting elections again,” the ex-governor said.
“By the time Asiwaju finishes his term, Atiku Abubakar will probably be 80 or 81. So, what will be the attraction?
“We should leave the stage when the ovation is loudest. I respect him, and I think Nigerians are craving for a younger generation now more than ever before. So, on what basis will Atiku come and contest again?”
Atiku Abubakar, 77 years old, expressed his intention to continue contesting for the Nigerian presidency as long as he remains healthy. He was the standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election.,
Meanwhile, Atiku has previously run for the presidency six times, appearing on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023.
Fayose also commented on the current state of the PDP, noting its decline, and highlighted the growing prominence of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, as a major opposition figure.
