Kwara Police Command has discharged three officers following their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of Quayum Ishola, a student from Kwara Polytechnic.
Gatekeepers News reports that Ishola, an ND2 student studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was reportedly shot at a checkpoint on September 4 and subsequently died from blood loss the following day at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
In response to his death, students organized protests and marched to the Kwara State Police Headquarters, demanding a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
They claimed that Ishola was shot by officers in police uniforms at a checkpoint along the Panat-ShopRite Road in Ilorin.
On September 9, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police force Public Relations Officer, named the officers implicated as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, all of whom are part of the state police command’s operations department.
Adejobi confirmed that the officers have been detained while an investigation is conducted at the force’s Criminal Investigations Department in Abuja.
In a statement on Friday, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, police spokesperson in Kwara, said the three officers have been remanded in prison custody.
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public that the three dismissed officers, Mr Abiodun Kayode, Mr James Emmanuel, and Mr Oni Philip, have been charged to court on 16th October, 2024,” the statement reads.
“They face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola.
“They have been remanded in prison custody pending further court proceedings.”
