A Non-Governmenral Organization, Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has called for an end to the carnage arising from petrol tankers accidents across the whole Country.
Gatekeepers News reports that the group bemoaned the accident that occurred in Jigawa State which reportedly killed 170 people with several others still hospitalised for serious injuries sustained in the accident last week.
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria called for better ways of distributing petroleum products across the Country.
In a Press Statement released today issued today and jointly signed by National Coordinator of the Group Alh. Ibrahim Abdullahi and the National Secretary Dr. Nasir Balogun the Group identified movement of petrol tankers with products for long hours on long distances and inadequate supervision process by NUPENG as being responsible for the sad situation – calling for an immediate halt to the apparent lapses to save the lives of the people; adding that most petrol tanker drivers are not known to relax when they appeared exhausted, before continuing their journies.
More importantly, the Group called on Federal Ministry of Transportation and Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources to synergise and evolve better distribution strategies for petroleum distribution in Nigeria that would ‘nip-in-the-bud’ frequent fall of Petrol Tankers leading to killing of a lot of people.
While sympathising with the Government and People of Jigawa State over the last week’s incident, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria called on Federal and State Governments to collaborate with Media Organizations in sensitisation programmes and advertisements featuring the relay of jingles on the electronic media platforms in various local languages across the Nation on the dangers inherent in scooping of petroleum products by ignorant people whenever any petrol tanker falls on the roads – warning that it is suicidal to continue to do so.
