Alex Ikwechegh, a federal lawmaker from Abia State, who was involved in an incident where he assaulted an Abuja Bolt driver named Stephen Abuwatseya, is set to be arraigned today, Wednesday, before the Kuje Magistrate Court.
Gatekeepers News reports that the investigation and prosecution of Ikwechegh are being conducted by the Special Investigation Unit of the Inspector General of Police.
The incident, which occurred on October 27, was captured in a viral video and shows Ikwechegh physically assaulting the driver while he was delivering a package at the lawmaker’s residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
The actions of the lawmaker have prompted significant public outcry, with many Nigerians condemning the incident.
In response to the backlash, Ikwechegh has issued an apology and expressed his intention to cooperate fully with the police investigation. He also mentioned that he is seeking counselling in light of his actions.
In a statement, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju said, “We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Steven, a Bolt driver. The IGP’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is in charge of the investigation and prosecution.
“The media is invited to cover the arraignment, which is scheduled for 12 pm today at Kuje Magistrate.”
