Court of Appeal in Abuja has discharged and acquitted former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, from his earlier conviction for false asset declaration imposed by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Gatekeepers News reports that Onnoghen’s conviction took place on April 18, 2019, under the tribunal led by Umar Yakubu Danladi. The Appellate Court overturned this conviction after addressing the underlying issues that prompted his trial.
In the judgment delivered by Justice Abba Bello Mohammed, it was noted that a settlement agreed upon by the federal government and Onnoghen played a key role in the decision. As part of this resolution, the court ordered the return of four bank accounts that had been subject to forfeiture.
Following the ruling, Onnoghen’s legal representatives, Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) Adegboyega Awomolo and Ogwu James Onoja, expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for their efforts in facilitating this resolution.
