Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the treason charges against the #Endbadgovernance# movement, a decision made by Justice Obiora Egwuatu.
Gatekeepers News reports that the charges were withdrawn by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, representing the federal government.
During the court proceedings, Fagbemi, represented by M.D. Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), exercised his authority under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to take over the case from the Inspector General of Police.
Following the court’s approval of this request, the Attorney General invoked the same constitutional provision to discontinue the trial for the 150 individuals accused.
No objections were raised by the various lawyers representing the accused, leading Justice Egwuatu to grant the request and subsequently strike out the charges. Although the accused were not present in court, the judge ordered their immediate release from prison remand.
The development follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Attorney General to terminate the charges against the accused, many of whom are reported to be minors and thus legally exempt from such trials.
