Blackout Hits Nigeria As National Grid Collapses Second Time In 72-Hour

transmission
Nigeria’s national grid has suffered its second collapse within a 72-hour period, leaving the country in a total blackout.

Gatekeepers News reports that the grid recorded zero megawatts (MW) as of Thursday, according to data from the Nigerian system operator’s portal.

Reports indicate a significant decline in power generation, with output falling from 3,743 MW at 10 AM to 2,709 MW by 11 AM. By noon, the grid was functioning at a mere 3.70 MW, with only a slight increase to 4.10 MW noted at 1 PM.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not confirmed the incident at the time of reporting.

Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) announced via its social media channels that they are facing a system outage that is affecting supply.

“Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07 November 2024 at 11:29Hrs affecting supply within our network,” IKEDC said.

“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.Kindly bear with us.”

This grid collapse marks the tenth occurrence in 2024. TCN has attributed the ongoing instability to various issues, including line and generator trippings.

On October 17, Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, articulated that the frequent failures of the national grid are largely due to outdated infrastructure.

He emphasised that without a comprehensive overhaul of the system, Nigeria would continue to face grid disturbances. The minister also highlighted the necessity for increased investment in power infrastructure as a crucial step towards preventing future collapses.
