Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has noted that Nigeria is undergoing a significant transformation following President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy.
Gatekeepers News reports that Soludo while speaking at the 13th convocation lecture of Veritas University in Abuja, titled ‘Let us make a new deal for Nigeria,’ emphasised the necessity for a shift away from subsidies that primarily benefit the elite. He advocated for the establishment of a productive social contract aimed at creating equitable opportunities for all citizens.
During his address, the governor pointed out several encouraging developments, including recent legislation on minimum wage, the introduction of a draft tax reform bill, and proposed cash transfer initiatives. He underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration between federal and state governments to facilitate the efficient implementation of these reforms.
Soludo also highlighted that while Nigeria has abolished detrimental subsidies on petrol, foreign exchange, and electricity, there remains a critical need for the federal government to develop an emergency national infrastructure plan to support the country’s ongoing transition.
“We have entered a muddling-through phase that requires careful navigation,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to craft a pragmatic new deal for the country and an emergency national infrastructure plan, similar to the US marshal plan used to rebuild Europe after World War II.
Soludo advised the graduates to create value for themselves and the country to enable them to navigate the larger society.
“The future you seek is in your hands. Only those who plan can control the future. While Nigeria may not have given you much, you are expected to give more than you have received,” the governor added.
On his part, Hyacinth Ichoku, vice-chancellor of Veritas University, thanked Soludo for his commitment to youth education.
Ichoku reiterated the university’s dedication to delivering quality education and fostering strong moral values.
