Legendary American jazz drummer, Roy Haynes has passed away.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Grammy-winning singer died at the age of 99.
According to his daughter, Leslie Haynes-Gilmore; the drummer died on Tuesday after a brief illness in Nassau County, New York.
Haynes was born on March 13, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The drummer began his musical career in 1940s and became a full-time professional drummer in 1945. His career spanned over eighty (80) years.
He was nominated for a Grammy Award for the first time in ‘Best Jazz Instrumental Performance’ for his work with Chick Corea in 1988.
Haynes was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Grammys, with another Lifetime Achievement Award from Jazz Foundation of America in 2019.
The drummer’s other awards included Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in 1996, and honorary doctorates from both the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory.
He was inducted into Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1999 and DownBeat magazine Hall of Fame in 2004.
Some of his notable albums include Afternoon, Cymbalism, Fountain of Youth, Whereas, Birds of a Feather: A Tribute to Charlie Parker and so on.
