NRC Trains Borno Journalists And Other Stakeholders On Measures To Mitigate Harmful Traditional Practices Against Women/Girls’ Rights

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), an International Non- Governmental Organization on Wednesday ended at two -day training to equip Borno Journalists And relevant stakeholders on ways to Mitigate traditional harmful practices affecting Women/ Girls’ rights.

Gatekeepers News reports that the NRC brought together Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Community Based Organisations ( CBO) Youths , Women Leaders. Religious and Traditional Rulers to mitigate practices affecting women and girls to own Housing, Land and Property (HLP) as Rights.

The roundtable discussion with participants which held at the prestigious City Star Restaurant in Maiduguri.the state capital herps on the the role of the Media ,Youth , and NGOs in promoting HLP rights for women and girls

According toThe NRC Country Advocacy and Communication Manager, Sabiu Suleiman said the aim of the discussion is to bring to the fore the injustice being meted out to Nigerian Women and girls with regards HLP rights and profer necessary solution

Suleiman said ” it is unfair to deny women and girls who are vulnerable groups in the society not to own a house, land or property,” Adding “those vulnerable groups are entitled and have a rights to do so as human beings.”

He revealed that key stakeholders and community leaders will help to promote awareness and collective action to influence cultural practices that limit Housing, Land and Property rights for women and girls.” This initiative is part of our broader commitment to safeguarding equitable housing, land and property access for all and ensuring gender-inclusive policies that protect.”

The NRC which is currently working in about 40 countries, Nigeria inclusive, also emphasized on need for partnerships between Journalists, Youth and NGOs, identifying key stakeholders ( government, civil society, community leaders media and strategies for effective collaboration to address harmful practices and Improving women and girls access to HLP rights using participants’ platforms.

” As stakeholders, this gathering is to seek your support and cooperation to promote awareness and collective action to influence cultural practices that limit Housing, Land and Property rights for women and girls. ” Suleiman said.
