Simon Ekpa’s Arrest Is A Step Towards Extradition To Nigeria – DHQ

LNigerian Army has expressed satisfaction regarding the recent arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa, who identifies as the self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Gatekeepers News reports that Ekpa was apprehended by law enforcement in Finland on Thursday and subsequently held by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which cited “probable cause for incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.”

According to the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Ekpa is accused of utilizing his leadership role within the separatist organization to incite violence against civilians and authorities in southeastern Nigeria. The NBI has indicated that these activities are believed to have been coordinated from Finland, particularly through Ekpa’s social media platforms.

Nigerian authorities have long requested Ekpa’s arrest and extradition, arguing that his actions on social media have exacerbated tensions and unrest. In response to the arrest, Tukur Gusau, the director of defense information, reported that Christopher Musa, the chief of defense staff, is pleased with the development.

“CDS is happy with his arrest in Finland, with the hope this will be a step towards his extradition to Nigeria so that he will face justice,” Gusau said.

Edward Buba, director of defence media operations, noted that the CDS was part of the voices that had called for Ekpa’s arrest following his “deep involvement in fueling terrorism” in the south-east.

“We are delighted about his arrest and glad that the international community is partnering with Nigeria in our fight against terrorism,” Buba added.
