Supreme Court had nullified National Lottery Act that was enacted in 2005 by National Assembly.
Gatekeepers News reports that Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel of Justices led by Justice Justice Mohammed Idris, held that National Assembly was bereft of the powers to legislate on issues relating to lottery and games of chance.
The apex court ruled that such powers only reside with Houses of Assembly of states of the federation, which have exclusive jurisdiction over matters about lottery.
The court ruled that National Lottery Act 2005 should no longer be enforced in all the states except Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in respect of which National Assembly has the power to make legislation.
The Supreme Court judgement followed a suit that was filed in 2008 by Lagos and other states that challenged the legal right of Federal Government to regulate issue of lottery and games of chance across the country.
