Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, recently appointed Regional Director-elect for Africa of the World Health Organization (WHO), has passed away while receiving medical treatment in India.
Gatekeepers News reports that this announcement was made by Tanzania’s parliament on Wednesday.
The Speaker of the parliament, Tulia Ackson, did not provide details regarding the cause of death but confirmed that arrangements are being made to repatriate Ndugulile’s body.
Ndugulile was set to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who had completed two five-year terms, starting his role as Regional Director in February 2025.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed his shock and sadness over Ndugulile’s tragic passing in a post on X.
Ghebreyesus posted, “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr Faustine Ndugulile, @WHOAFRO Regional Director-elect.
