A boat carrying over 200 people capsized in the Dambo-Ebuchi area of the River Niger on Friday morning.
Gatekeepers News reports that the passengers, which included traders and farmers, were en route to Katcha for the weekly market.
Rescue efforts are currently being conducted by local divers, with reports indicating that eight bodies have been recovered so far.
Ibrahim Hussaini, spokesperson for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, stated that he is awaiting more information about the incident. He also mentioned that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing are ongoing.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a previous boat accident in Niger State, where 42 lives were lost in the Gbajibo community of Mokwa LGA just two months ago.
