Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, highlighting their potential benefits for Nigerians.
Gatekeepers News reports that Gumi’s support comes amidst opposition from various northern leaders, including governors, lawmakers, and traditional figures, who argue that the reforms could exacerbate poverty in their region.
President Tinubu has defended the proposed legislation, stating that the four tax reform bills aim to simplify tax administration, reduce the financial burden on low-income earners, and eliminate issues of double taxation and excessive levies. Sheikh Gumi’s endorsement adds considerable weight to the ongoing debate regarding these reforms.
Gumi’s support followed a thorough review of the draft documents, a step that many northern politicians who oppose the bills admitted they had not undertaken. While Gumi praised the overall potential of the reforms, he suggested that adjustments are needed in the Value Added Tax (VAT) component to address widespread concerns throughout the country.
Gumi said: “I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”
