Dele Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, has gained significant popularity, becoming a bestseller on Amazon Books amid ongoing legal challenges related to its publication.
Gatekeepers News reports that the book is currently ranked 555 overall on the platform and holds the number one position in the elections category.
Additionally, it has topped charts in several subcategories, including general elections, political process, and political commentary and opinion, receiving an impressive customer rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.
Published on July 2, the book explores allegations that wealthy Nigerians have manipulated the judicial system for their benefit. However, the content has sparked legal controversy, leading to Farotimi’s recent court appearance.
On Wednesday, Farotimi was arraigned in a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, charged with “criminally defaming” Afe Babalola, a distinguished senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) mentioned in the book. Farotimi pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, requested that Farotimi be remanded pending further investigation, but his counsel, Dayo Akeredolu, opposed this, seeking bail under liberal terms and self-recognition. The court, presided over by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, denied the bail application and ordered Farotimi to be held in custody until December 10.
Following the court proceedings, Roving Heights bookstore experienced a surge in demand, causing its website to crash due to “unusual traffic,” reflecting the heightened interest in the book.
