Police Confirm 22 Deaths From Anambra Food Distribution Stampede

Police command in Anambra has disclosed that twenty-two (22) people died from the stampede that occurred in the state on Saturday.

Gatekeepers News reports that spokesman of the command, Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement released on Sunday, said the command has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Recall the tragic incident occurred on Saturday during a rice distribution event at Amaranta stadium in Ojika, Ihiala LGA which was organised by Obijackson Foundation.

The spokesman added that those who sustained injuries are receiving medical treatment.

He said, “The commissioner of police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on 21/12/2024 in Okija, Ihiala local government area, are receiving treatment and regrettably stated that twenty-two people lost their lives.”

“The CP commiserates with family and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured a quick recovery.”

“Meanwhile, the investigation into the unfortunate incident is still ongoing.”

Recall that at least ten (10) people including children died in a stampede that also occurred on Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.

Additionally, about thirty-five (35) people, mostly children, lost their lives during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital on Wednesday.
