Elon Musk’s microblogging platform, X, has announced a significant increase in the subscription price for its Premium+ plan globally, with users in Nigeria experiencing one of the highest hikes at 51%.
Gatekeepers News reports starting December 21, 2024, the Premium+ subscription, which offers an ad-free experience among other features, will cost Nigerian users N34,000 per month, up from the previous price of N22,550. The price increase varies by country, with adjustments such as:
– In the United States, the Premium+ price increased from $16 to $22, a 37.5% rise.
– For users in the European Union, the monthly fee has risen from €16 to €21.
– In Canada, the Premium+ subscription will see a hike from $20 to $29, representing a 45% increase.
The company clarified that the price adjustment will take effect for new subscribers starting December 21, 2024.
“If you’re an existing subscriber and your next billing cycle starts before January 20, 2025, you’ll be charged at your current rate; otherwise, the new rate will begin with your first billing cycle after that date. See pricing information in the table below.
“Prices may vary by location, applicable taxes, and your payment method’s fees. For any questions, please message X Premium,” it stated.
The reasons and benefit of the price increment, according to X, include:
1. Ad-Free Experience: Premium+ now offers a completely ad-free browsing experience, enhancing user satisfaction.
2. Expanded Features: Subscribers will receive higher priority support, access to new features such as Radar, and increased limits on advanced AI tools, ensuring they benefit from ongoing improvements.
3. Support for Creators: The new pricing structure aims to support the platform’s evolving creator program. Subscription fees are now more directly linked to the quality of content and user engagement, shifting the revenue share model towards a more equitable system that rewards creators based on the value they bring to the platform rather than just ad impressions.
“Your Premium+ subscription fee contributes to this new, more equitable system where creator earnings are tied to the overall value they bring to X, not impressions of ads,” it added.
The price increment, however, did not affect the lower Premium subscription plan which still costs only N3,650 per month in Nigeria and N38,500 annually.
