Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained Joy Enwa, the Accountant-General of Delta State, in connection with an alleged N1.3 trillion fraud linked to Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that Dele Oyewale, a spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that Enwa was released after her interrogation.
“Mrs. Enwa was detained for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the mismanagement of state funds under the former (Okowa) administration. Some other government officials have also been interrogated,” Oyewale told TheCable.
The anti-graft agency questioned other officials, including a former director of finance and administration and a senior government house official.
On November 4, the anti-graft agency arrested Okowa, accusing him of diverting N1.3 trillion and using public funds for the acquisition of properties in both Abuja and Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
The disputed amount reportedly includes portions of the 13 percent derivation fund designated for oil-producing states.
Okowa has denied the allegations, asserting that his arrest and the ongoing investigation are “politically motivated.”
