South Korea’s parliament has voted to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, with 192 out of 300 lawmakers supporting the motion.
Gatekeepers News reports that this move comes after Han blocked the appointment of three justices to the Constitutional Court, sparking opposition from the Democratic Party.
Han’s impeachment was a result of his failure to promulgate bills providing special counsel for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The governing party politicians boycotted the vote, but Speaker Woo Won-shik ruled that Han could be impeached by a simple majority due to his status as a cabinet minister.
With Han’s impeachment, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is now next in line to assume the acting presidency, according to South Korean law.
This development marks a significant shift in South Korea’s political landscape, following President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment on December 14 over his imposition of martial law.
