Segun Olowookere, an Osun state resident who was sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a chicken and eggs in 2010, has been released from prison.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a recent viral interview with Biola Adebayo, a Nollywood actress, Olowookere’s parents said some police men arrested their son for an offence he didn’t commit.
They added that a divisional police officer (DPO) requested N30,000 for the release of their son who was arrested at the age of 17, but they could only raise N20,000 at the time, resulting in his son’s imprisonment.
Subsequently on December 26, Ademola Adeleke, Governor of the state granted pardon to 53 convicts including Olowookere.
In a video circulating online on Monday, Biola was seen standing in front of Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison with Olowookere who had just been released.
The actress appreciated the Osun state Governor for granting Olowookere pardon and thanked Nigerians for their support, adding that prison officials commended Olowookere for his good conduct in prison.
She said, “This is Segun Olowookere, we are just leaving Kirikiri. He is finally out of the correctional centre. Thank you so much for the love and support that we got.”
“Segun is a very good guy. The testimonies at the correctional centre were amazing. We are glad that he is out now for good.”
“Thank you to Governor Ademola Adeleke, we are grateful.”
