Borno State Government said on Monday that it will soon commence the naming of streets after local and and international heroes who have distinguished themselves in their various fields and brought honour to the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that the move, according to the state government is in line with the urban renewal drive of Governor Zulum’s administration, which will include house numbering in urban centres.

The Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Prof Usman Tar stated this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the first Executive Council Meeting of the year held at the Government House, Maiduguri where 42 memos were considered.

According to the Commissioner, the street naming and house numbering will commence after a committee is set up to carry out the assignment, adding that “Our heroes, both local and International will be considered.

“We will consider our culture as well, we cherish and respect our cultures in all our 8 emirates. We will also consider, state character ( Borno -Home of Peace ) and National Unity.

The Commissioner revealed that all informal names of streets will also be given to new ones that are embedded in the respectable culture of all parts of the state.

He added that ” there’re so many informal names of streets and places that we’re going to do away with and come up with that reflect our cultural sensitivity.”

Meanwhile, the state government has approved the renaming of Borno State University to Kashim Ibrahim University in honour of the first Governor of Northern Nigeria

Prof. Tar explained that the renaming of the university will be subject to legislative procedures and the necessary notifications to relevant authorities in coordination with the Ministry of Education.

“Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This is subject to further legislative work by the State Assembly to amend the law establishing the University. It is also subject to the Ministry of Education taking necessary action by informing relevant regulatory authorities like the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN)”, Prof. Tar stated.
