Nigeria Police Force has filed a notice of discontinuance regarding the defamation suit initiated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, against Lagos-based legal practitioner and author, Dele Farotimi.
Gatekeepers News reports this notice, dated January 29, was submitted in accordance with Section 108 (1) (2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and seeks to withdraw the charges against Dele Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.
The notice, signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, indicates that the police intend to request the court to strike out the charges, following the complainant Are Afe Babalola’s decision to discontinue the case after intervention from concerned members of the public, including prominent traditional rulers.
“The matter is slated for hearing today, but we have filed a notice of discontinuance dated January 29, 2025, and filed this morning,” he stated.
Counsel for the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), did not oppose the withdrawal.
Consequently, Justice Babs Kuewumi struck out the case, declaring, “This case is hereby struck out.”
