Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, has been arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on charges of cybercrime in a case before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sowore, accompanied by his lawyers and several supporters, honoured the police’s summons on January 27, 2025, where he was questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
Following the questioning, he was granted administrative bail; however, he chose to reject the bail conditions and remained in custody.
The police subsequently filed a 16-count charge against him related to cybercrime.
Among the accusations, in count three, Sowore is alleged to have referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” in a post made on his X handle on December 20, 2024.
Sowore is also accused of posting a picture of Egbetokun accompanied by a caption criticising the police leadership, stating, “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption, a country run by characterless people cannot make progress.”
He further allegedly warned that “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”
Sowore has pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts of the cybercrime charges brought against him.
