Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, has been granted bail in the sum of N10 million with one surety.
Gatekeepers News reports that Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday ruled that the surety must have verified landed property in the federal capital territory (FCT).
Liman also ordered Sowore to deposit his passport with the court registrar.
After the ruling, Marshall Abubakar, Sowore’s counsel, urged the court to release his client to the legal team within a few hours pending the fulfilment of the bail condition.
The judge granted Sowore a 24-hour time extension to remain with his lawyers.
The case was adjourned to April for continuation of trial.
Sowore honoured the police’s summons on January 27, 2025, where he was questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
Following the questioning, he was granted administrative bail; however, he chose to reject the bail conditions and remained in custody.
The police filed a 16-count charge against him related to cybercrime on Wednesday.
Among the accusations, in count three, Sowore is alleged to have referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” in a post made on his X handle on December 20, 2024.
Sowore is also accused of posting a picture of Egbetokun accompanied by a caption criticising the police leadership, stating, “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption, a country run by characterless people cannot make progress.”
He further allegedly warned that “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”
