A student of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has died after falling from the balcony of an off-campus hostel.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred last weekend at Lasunwon First Gate, Ikorodu.
According to Lanre Kuye, the university’s spokesperson, the student, Emmanuel Nweke, a 100-level mathematics student, stepped out of the building’s first floor to receive fresh air. He leaned on the house railings but lost his balance and fell to the ground.
Kuye confirmed that the incident did not occur on campus, stating, “It did not happen in our hostel. We do not have a hostel. It happened off-campus. Students rent houses outside the university.”
The chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Lagos, Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, has called on the school management to provide hostels for students to prevent such incidents in the future.
The union has also demanded a thorough investigation into Nweke’s death and asked the Lagos government to sanction off-campus house owners violating building regulations.
