The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun state chapter has directed all local government area workers in the state to suspend their services effective Monday, 17th February 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that the NLC issued the directive in a statement titled “SAFETY OF OUR MEMBERS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE”, issued by its Chairman, Comrade (Dr) Christopher A. Arapasopo in Osogbo on Sunday.
This followed rising political tension in the state over an alleged attempt to return sacked local government chairmen to office.
NLC said the directive is aimed at forestalling the state of anarchy as a result of controversial interpretations of the Appeal Court judgement on the status of sacked local government chairmen.
The union said, “We won’t allow our members to return until their safety at work can be assured and guaranteed, which is their constitutional right.”
“The NLC is apolitical, but we won’t allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.”
The union said it has noticed the political uproar bringing agitations and fear among its members working within local government areas across the state.
It added, “We urge all the political parties and their members to abide by the rule of law. We insist on the rule of law to avoid a descent to anarchy.”
“We hereby call on all security agencies to ensure the safety of all lives and properties within Osun State Local Governments and the public in general.”
“The NLC Osun State remains committed to defending the rights, welfare, and safety of all its members.”
