Vice-President Kashim Shettima attended the funeral of Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and one of the country’s founding fathers.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nujoma died on February 8 at the age of 95 in a hospital where he had been receiving treatment for weeks due to an illness in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, former President Thabo Mbeki, and ex-Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete attended Nujoma’s funeral on Saturday.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Nujoma as a warrior who galvanised Nigeria and other African nations to fight for his country’s freedom.
Nujoma cofounded the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) which became the leading movement for the country’s independence in 1960.
He became the first president of Namibia the same year it gained independence, 1990. He served three terms before stepping down in 2005.
