Obiora Ifoh, the Spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP), has stated that the party is not looking to pursue a merger.
Gatekeepers News reports that he however noted that the LP is open to exploring a partnership for future elections.
This announcement comes in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has called for a rebranding and the potential merger or coalition of the Labour Party.
In a communique issued after its meeting during the weekend, the congress directed the national administrative council (NAC) to “take immediate steps, which may include rebranding, merger, or forming coalitions to defend the interests of NLC and Nigerian workers in the party with a view to reclaiming the party and returning it to its original ideological roots”.
“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people,” the communique reads.
“The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the party remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.”
However, in a statement issued on Monday, Ifoh said the LP “remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections”.
