The Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to appear before the parliament.
Gatekeepers News reports that this action comes after the RSIEC officials failed to attend a scheduled session on Friday.
The assembly had previously invited Adolphus Enebeli, the chairman of RSIEC, along with the commission’s commissioners, to present relevant documents detailing the commission’s allocation and expenditure of state resources in the absence of an appropriation law since January 2024.
In light of their non-attendance, the assembly threatened to issue warrants of arrest for Enebeli and the commissioners should they continue to disregard the invitation.
During the plenary session, Enemi George, the lawmaker representing Asari-Toru constituency 2, proposed extending the invitation to Monday, March 10, 2024, to allow RSIEC officials the opportunity to respond to inquiries.
The assembly has resolved to send another invitation letter to the RSIEC officials for their appearance on Monday. Additionally, RSIEC recently announced that the local government area elections in Rivers State will take place on August 9, 2025, a decision made in compliance with a verdict from the apex court.
