Eid-Ul-Fitr: 2 Die – 20 Injure In Gombe Prayer Ground Stampede

Two people died and 20 were injured in a chaotic stampede at the main Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground in Gombe State on Sunday.

Gatekeepers News reports that Buhari Abdullahi, Gombe police spokesman disclosed this in a statement.

Abdullahi said the incident occurred at the exit gate shortly after prayers, as crowds rushed out due to inadequate exit capacity and intense heat.

He said, “The stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue.”

“The situation, worsened by intense heat, led to the unfortunate incident, and 22 individuals were affected and were immediately taken to hospitals for medical attention.”

“Regrettably, two of the victims, a four-year-old boy, and six months old baby girl, were pronounced dead by doctors while receiving treatment.”

The command’s spokesman added that the Eid ground managers were asked to keep all gates open for smooth movement, especially after prayers, to prevent overcrowding and stampedes.

Abdullahi conveyed the command’s condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured quick recovery.

Inuwa Yahaya, the state Governor, in a statement by his aide, extended his condolences to the victims’ families and ordered a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence.

He added, “The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top priority.”

“The state government is committed to learning from this incident and implementing corrective measures.”

The Governor said the state government would cover all medical expenses for those injured.
