Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has recruited 34 resident doctors for a seven-year residency training program.
Gatekeepers News reports that this decision was communicated through a statement by Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Wike, on Wednesday.
These 34 doctors represent the first group of 60 medical residency trainees across eight different specialities in FCTA hospitals. Olayinka emphasized that this recruitment is aimed at improving healthcare services within the FCT, ensuring better medical support for the community.
“This is the first time this is being done outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby giving doctors more opportunity and bringing more competent hands into healthcare delivery in the FCT,” the statement reads.
“Among the 34 employed, five were in the psychiatry department, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.”
Olayinka said the FCTA civil service commission would commence the process for the recruitment of the remaining 26 resident doctors soon.
He said the 26 include one for the psychiatry department, four in internal medicine, eight in general surgery, five in anaesthesiology, and eight in paediatrics.
