A three-storey building located at 10 Oremeta Street, Ojodu-Berger, Lagos State, collapsed on Saturday morning.
Gatekeepers News reports that one person died, while thirteen others who were trapped beneath the rubble were rescued from the collapsed building, which operated as a bar and restaurant.
The victims included restaurant staff, customers, and an entire family who were inside the building when it gave way.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, permanent secretary of Lagos state emergency management agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, noting that operatives of the agency led the rescue operation.
The search and rescue operation was supported by a multi-agency response, including Lagos state ambulance service, Lagos state fire and rescue service (LASTMA), FRSC, Nigerian Police Force, and Lagos state building control agency (LASBCA).
He noted that the incident was caused by unapproved structural modifications, saying
“It was an old building converted into an eatery. Additional construction had been carried out on it before the structure finally collapsed.”
“This is a serious warning against tampering with ageing structures.”
