Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its Rivers State Council to organise a peaceful rally on May 1, 2025, to demand the restoration of democratic governance in the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the rally, themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” will be held on council premises and will involve all affiliate unions.
In a letter dated April 22, 2025, the NLC leadership emphasised that the celebration should be marked with sober reflection, given the current circumstances in Rivers State.
The rally is expected to carry strong messages centred on democratic governance, workers’ welfare, and the people’s desire for freedom and liberty.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and urged all members to use the May Day occasion to renew calls for placing the people at the centre of leadership in Rivers State.
The Congress noted that the situation in Rivers State requires a special focus on rebuilding civic leadership and safeguarding workers’ rights within a truly democratic environment.
