Series of explosions occurred at the Giwa army barracks in Maiduguri, Borno state capital, on Wednesday, causing widespread panic.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident, according to Reuben Kovangiya, acting deputy director of army public relations, was caused by excessive heat amid sweltering temperatures.

“The explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri, which led to the explosion of some munitions,” Kovangiya said in a statement.

The army and police police spokesperson in Borno, Nahum Daso attributed the incident to the high temperatures sparking a fire in the ammunition facility, leading to the detonation of some munitions.

The situation was brought under control through the collaborative efforts of the Borno state fire service and other security agencies’ fire units.

Both the army and police have urged the public to remain calm and disregard any rumors of an attack.
