A magistrate court in Ifo LGA of Ogun state has convicted and sentenced the Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola popularly known as Portable to three months in prison for assault.
Gatekeepers News reports that the court however offered him the option of paying a fine of N30,000 instead of serving the jail term.
The conviction stems from a 2022 incident in which Portable was accused of assaulting Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi in the Okeosa area of Ilogbo.
He was also alleged to have stolen musical equipment, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a studio interface cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone.
Olumide Awoleke, the police inspector, who testified in court had said Portable conspired with others to commit the offenses, which violated Sections 517, 351, 383, and 384 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo, in his judgment delivered on Wednesday, found Portable guilty of two counts of assault.
He was sentenced to one month in prison or a fine of N10,000 on the first count, and two months or N20,000 on the second.
Portable was initially arraigned in April 2023 on three charges of assault and theft as detailed in charge sheet No. MIF/192c/2023.
He had failed to attend court proceedings after being granted bail, which led to his remand at the Ogun State Correctional Service. The theft charge was eventually struck out due to lack of evidence.
