Professor Chris Piwuna of the University of Jos has been elected as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made at the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress (NDC), held at the University of Benin in Benin City, Edo State.
Professor Piwuna won the election, defeating his opponent, Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. The NDC, which brought together delegates from universities across the country, was convened to discuss pressing issues affecting tertiary education in Nigeria and elect new leadership.
As the new ASUU President, Professor Piwuna is expected to lead the union’s negotiations with the government and other stakeholders to address key challenges facing Nigerian universities. These include funding, Earned Academic Allowances, brain drain, autonomy, and improved welfare for academic staff.
Professor Piwuna takes over from Prof. Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who has served as the union’s president since 2021.
