CDS Proposes Lake Chad Restoration As Key To Curbing Boko Haram

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen.Christopher Musa on Thursday revealed that the military is highly optimistic that restoring Lake Chad’s water levels could help curb Boko Haram’s activities, paving the way for lasting peace in the surrounding countries.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Gen. Musa stated that plans to restore Lake Chad to its former status will soon be unveiled noting that it promises to tame activities of the terrorists group operating in the region.

The CDS made this known during an operational visit to Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital to boost the morale of troops fighting the 16 years old Insurgency.

According to the CDS , job opportunities will be provided to millions of persons residents in countries around the Lake Chad Basin, stressing that the military will also utilise the opportunity root -out remnants of Boko Haram terrorist operating within the area.

“We’re working toward having a Lake Chad meeting and the recharging of Lake because it has receeded to just 10 % of its original size. If we’re able to recharge Lake Chad, it will address the issue of insecurity. I can assure you that within a very short period action will start taking place.

“For now, the terrorists (Boko Haram) are using islands , though they are not in any of the islands into Nigeria, but they are using other islands- they’re using the islands to do a lot of things. So recharging and opening up the Lake Chad will give ability for our Navy,: to move with other Navy of Cameroon and Chad to take- out the terrorists,” Gen Musa said.

On the recent attacks in Borno State, the CDS revealed that new fighting equipments have been procured and will be utilised to serve justice on Boko Haram terrorists.

The CDS added that military will also deploy modern technology to fight the boko terrorists group and make the North East a peaceful place

“We’re taking a lot of measures, we have just changed the Theatre Commander (TC) other commanders have been changed, new equipments are coming and we rely a lot on technology,” The CDS said.
